Your Questions, Answered
This page answers common questions about cycling coaching, performance support, and what to expect after requesting a consultation.

There isn’t a minimum level.
Some riders are early in their journey and looking for guidance as things begin to feel more serious. Others have raced for many years and want a clearer, more sustainable way of training. Some are at a point where they want to take things more seriously, explore what they’re capable of, and strive for more from their training.
I’ve worked with riders across that spectrum, from youth and junior athletes through to professional development teams and international competition. That experience helps inform how progression is managed, but the starting point is always where you are now — not where you think you should be.
Coaching is also well suited to anyone who wants to better understand their training, refine how they prepare, and optimise performance in a way that’s realistic, sustainable, and aligned with their current goals.

All coaching services are delivered remotely, which allows me to work with athletes internationally. I’ve supported riders across Europe, Canada, Australia, and the United States.

Coaching is informed by both clinical training and lived experience at the highest level of the sport.
I’m a physiotherapist by background and have competed as a professional cyclist, experiencing both the positives and challenges that come with high-performance environments. I’ve also worked within world-class performance systems, including exposure to elite programmes such as the British Cycling Olympic setup around the 2012 cycle.
A key part of the coaching process is education and collaboration. Rather than simply prescribing sessions, the aim is to work together so you can better understand your own body, training responses, and decision-making over time.
Performance is viewed from multiple angles, not just training load or power numbers. Depending on what’s most relevant, this can include:
structured training and load management
strength and conditioning
nutrition guidance
performance optimisation, including aerodynamic optimisation, race tactics, technical planning, equipment optimisation, pacing strategies, and event-specific demands
critical power and performance profiling
physiological testing where appropriate
The focus is on applying the right tools at the right time, based on the individual in front of me — not forcing everyone into the same model.

No.
Of course a power meter can be useful, but if your new to the sport or just do not use one we can still optimise your performance!

After you request a consultation, we’ll arrange a call to talk things through properly.
This is a chance to:
discuss your goals and background
ask any questions you may have
understand how coaching would work for you
decide whether it’s the right fit on both sides
There’s no pressure to commit during this call.
If we decide to move forward, the next step is onboarding. This includes:
completing a medical and injury history form
outlining your training background and recent consistency
setting up TrainingPeaks
arranging payment
Once onboarding is complete, we’ll usually schedule a follow-up call to initiate your first training block. This often includes baseline testing, such as critical power testing, to help guide early training decisions.
The aim is to start with clarity, structure, and realistic expectations — not to rush straight into training.

Local athletes can work with me in person for both coaching and physiotherapy. Coaching is typically delivered remotely, with in-person sessions used selectively where appropriate.

Both Develop and Optimise include fully individualised training and unlimited communication, meaning you can ask questions, give feedback, and discuss training adjustments as needed — not just at set check-in points.
The Develop package is ideal if you want clear structure, consistent progress, and regular review. It includes individualised training plans, weekly analysis, critical power testing and profiling, nutrition guidance, TrainingPeaks Basic, and a 10% discount on physiotherapy services.
The Optimise package is designed for riders aiming to maximise performance with deeper insight and broader support. It includes everything in Develop, plus TrainingPeaks Premium, comprehensive screening, a fully individualised strength and conditioning programme, advanced performance analysis and modelling, wider performance optimisation support, and a 25% discount on physiotherapy services.
In short, both packages offer close support and communication — Optimise adds depth, prevention focus, and more comprehensive performance planning.

Performance optimisation isn’t just about riding harder — it’s about carefully aligning all elements that contribute to performance. This can include:
aerodynamic refinement (if applicable)
race tactics and pacing strategies
equipment optimisation
event-specific planning
technical skills embedded into your training structure
These elements are built into the Optimise package when appropriate, depending on your goals and training background.

Working with youth and junior riders is about much more than chasing results or ticking boxes. At that stage, learning how to train, recover, and understand your own body often matters more than any single race or season.
I’ve spent a lot of time guiding riders as they move through age-group racing and into more demanding environments, including those progressing towards development teams and international competition. A physio-informed approach helps make sure that progression is steady and appropriate, particularly through periods of growth, increasing training loads, and rising expectations.
The aim is to help young riders move forward with confidence, good habits, and a healthy relationship with the sport — so progression feels sustainable rather than rushed.

Masters athletes often arrive with a lot of experience behind them — years of riding, racing, and life outside the bike. Coaching starts by respecting that context, rather than trying to overwrite it.
Training is shaped around recovery, consistency, and what fits alongside work, family, and long-term health. A physio-informed perspective helps guide sensible loading and decision-making, reducing the risk of recurring setbacks while still allowing meaningful progress.
The goal isn’t to recreate how you trained years ago, but to find an approach that lets you keep improving — and enjoying the process — now.

Coaching takes into account the discipline you ride and the demands that come with it. Different disciplines ask different things of the body, mindset, and training approach, and those differences matter when planning how someone progresses.
I’ve worked with riders across a range of disciplines, including road racing, time trials, mountain bike, track cycling, cyclocross, gravel, and endurance-focused events. That experience helps inform how training is structured, how load is managed, and how decisions are made over time.
The aim is always to respect the demands of the discipline while building something that’s sustainable, realistic, and suited to the individual rather than forcing everyone into the same model.

Many people come in while already working with a coach and are dealing with pain, injury, or recurring issues. Physiotherapy can be used to assess what’s going on, support recovery, and help you return to training more confidently.
Where appropriate, and with your consent, communication with your coach can help align rehab and training decisions. There’s no expectation to change coaches — the focus is on helping you move and train better.

Yes — critical power testing and profiling is included from the outset. It helps establish personalised training targets and benchmarks for planning and progression. Including full power and heart rate zones
Both packages include regular retesting, and downloadable reports.
Not sure which service you need?
That’s completely fine — we’ll work it out together during the consultation.
